2021.12.04 17:27 djstenny Pokemon v Lions; My (Very Long Take)

There is a TL;DR at the end, I'd recommend doing that instead.
As funny as the Pokemon v Lions debate is, it astounds me how no one thinks it's even close. I've never met anyone who thinks that it could go either way. To rectify this, I'm going to give my (very long) take on the battle.
First, some baseline information. The debate is whether one of every pokemon could win against 1 billion lions. There are about 900 pokemon, counting all the different forms. So, can those 900 pokemon defeat 1 billion lions?
First we need to clarify our methodology. There are several different scenarios that could be covered in the debate, such as whether we abide purely by game mechanics or anime mechanics, if it is a horde battle or a series of one v ones, etc. I'll try to specify the rules of each match before going into them.
Game Mechanics, one huge horde battle:
In this case, we rely on game mechanics, and all of the lions and pokemon are on the field at once. WolfeVGC did an intereting video on this scenario (link), but I think he massively overcomplicated it. Essentially, one Pokemon uses perish song, in three turns everything dies. Perish Song is a move that causes every pokemon on the field to die in three turns. In this case, that is everything is on the field. This causes all of the lions to die, but some pokemon do survive. Perish song does not affect pokemon with the ability soundproof, so Pokemon technically win.
Game Mechanics Proper:
In the games, pokemon are sent out one at a time to fight against one pokemon from the other side, and trainers can switch out as necessary to gain advantages or disadvantages. In this format, there is no way for the pokemon to win. It's just a matter of numbers. They just don't have enough and the lions have so many bodies, I don't think the Pokemon could overcome it.
In all of the games, there is an encyclopedia for all the pokemon, listing weights, feats, lore, and just a bunch of random information. If we treat these assumptions as facts, then it is really close. Yes, a lot of the entries for some of them are ridiculous, but there are a lot of lions. I do think the Pokemon eventually win out, mainly due to the legendaries' ridiculous entries. They apparently have the power to rend Space (Palkia), flood the world (Kyogre), and power over sleep (Darkrai/Cresselia). These powers don't make it a landslide, if the lions were coordinated, they could sacrifice some of their bretheren to stand on to survive a flood and Palkia can only rend space so fast. That's what it boils down to, can the powerful pokemon be ridiculously powerful fast enough to overcome the lions. I think they can, but it is close
Anime Logic:
Unknown, to this day the limits of Ash's Pikachu and the limits of any one Pokemon in the Anime are impossible. Depending on the character arcs, the writers might write it so that the lions lose in a close match and Ash loses most of his friends to the horde, but it could also easily be a finale for the series where everyone dies and the lions take over.
In all seriousness, the anime is weird. There's an episode where Pikachu attacks itself and another Pokemon with electricity to give them both lightening armor, which boosts their attacks? and gives protection???? I don't know, how do you judge Anime powerlevels? I also don't know much about the anime, but I feel like it could go either way. All of the legendaries are present with their absurd powers, but they aren't as defined as the Pokedex is. So call it a draw unless someone else wants to offer input.
The final scenario is a situation in which we have to think. Game data won't be used, just what the pokemon can do canonically, and how they stack up against lions. About half the pokemon are useless in the attacking sense, so they have to have niche jobs to do something to help.
The problem the Pokemon have to overcome is the numbers. How can 900 pokemon kill 1 billion lions. The pokemon are constantly expending energy to kill lions, when more always come to replace them. They need a plan to overcome. You could try to kill the lions as quickly as possible, then you don't have to worry about fatigue. This method isn't very viable considering the difference in numbers. You could try something that nullifies the Lion's number advantage. Illusions or enraging lions to make them fight each other falls under this category, but I can't think of any Pokemon that have that ability. The final choice is to constantly switch out the pokemon to prevent fatigue from accumulating. Pick some defensive pokemon, have it set up defenses and attract the attention of the lions so they all come and attack it. Then when it gets tired, switch it out for another defensive tank to wall damage while the other rests. Have the supporters and attackers do something similar.
Then again there's about a hundred plans that could be created. The problem is just like the meme: "That's a lot of lions." If you put Sun Tsu in charge of the pokemon, they would win. It just depends on how strategically the sides act. Some Pokemon are prideful; unwilling to work with others. Others are outright enemies that have been eternal rivals. Power is secondary in the face of these issues.
But the lion side faces cooperation issues too. Lion prides typically don't exceed 30 members, so the notion that they would all work together is also flawed. If the billion lions fracture into their prides, the Pokemon could take advantage of this weakness, annhialate entire prides at once to avoid angering any lions into attacking, and then suddenly the Pokemon win.
The debate goes much further than most people go, which side is smart enough to employ tactics that would help them win? Numbers aren't always the deciding factor, look at a lot of history, and you'll see instances of smaller groups managing military victories over larger armies. It comes down to tactics, and now we can truely analyze the battle.
Lions do exhibit promise when it comes to problem solving, but this pales in comparison to Alakazam's (alleged, even if it isn't this high he does have a high IQ) 5000 IQ. This brain power would be easily capable of coming up with solutions to problems, as IQ is explicitly a test of problem solving skills (outside of the whole racism thing). With Alakazam in charge of the Pokemon, I think they would be able to come up with startegies that could defeat the lions. Heck it doesn't even have to be just Alakazam, a lot of Pokemon are very smart, put them all on a team to come up with a strategy. Or just use Malamar to hypnotize literally everyone to be in perfect sync and agree on everything.
That's why I think that the Pokemon beat the lions. There are countless scenarios people can come up with for either side. Yes, it's a lot of lions. Yes, if the Pokemon charge and try to overwhelm the lions, they will probably lose. No semantics and arguing can overcome that deficit head on. But if the pokemon are smart and come up with strategies, I think they could defeat a billion lions. It certainly won't be easy, but it is possible.
I think the battle is close. The sheer numbers are hard to overcome, but it is possible. I think it is much closer than people think. If they collide head on, I'd say at least half of the lions die from the absurd powers of the legendaries. But eventually they will get fatigued. They can't continue forever, and thus will lose. If they take it slow, I don't think the pokemon come out unscathed. There will be casualties on both sides, and those casualties will be major, a textbook Pyrhhic Victory.
Most people use the Logical Lens to observe the conflict, but if we tally up the results from all the Lenses it's pretty much a draw. Pokemon only have a definitive win if the games are taken as literal. Any other methodology is up for debate, depending on tactical applications. I think Tactics are the thing that will ultimately sway any of these battles. If the Pokemon employ tactics, they have the ability to win in every scenario. The Lions only win when the Pokemon abandon all tactics and attack head on... kind of like every single 9 year old playing the game.
tl:dr: Depends on what you accept as true. Pokemon win if the Games are taken literally. If you don't it depends on Tactical Applications on both sides.

2021.12.04 17:27 cerenatee Is It Okay To Nail A Bench Top To The Legs?

I bought an unfinished bench I didn't realize had an apron. The bench is only 18 inches tall and I need all 18 inches for clearance. If I took off the apron and drove some ring shank nails into the legs through the top of the bench, would the bench still be stable enough to use on a road trip to hold boxes? The boxes aren't heavy but I'm trying to account for lots of car movement.
I've Googled until I'm blue in the face and all I can find are really nice ways to do it when I'm trying for quick and easy.

I’m not sure why but I always thought that popular super hot girls’ buttholes never stink because I assume they use scented wipes when they poop and take showers everyday and washing really good down there always. I just assume their whole body is clean all the time and doesn’t smell. Unless of course right after a workout or something.

I recently published my first book—Echoes of the Gospel in Harry Potter—and I thought some people here might be interested! When I first read the Harry Potter series a few years ago, I was surprised by the many ways the Harry Potter series echoes or reflects the biblical story line. And since I hadn't heard many people talk about these connections, I decided to write this book!
Here is the back cover blurb:
The best-selling book series of all time and the best-selling book of all time—do they have anything in common? And if so, might there be a reason for that? Echoes of the Gospel in Harry Potter suggests that there is a profound connection between these two beloved and inspirational stories and, moreover, that it is the connection between the two that has caused them to be so widely read and enjoyed.
Each chapter sheds light on this connection from a different angle by unpacking how either an aspect of the magical world, a character, or a theme in Harry Potter echoes the gospel—the story the Bible is telling that finds its climax in Jesus Christ. Whether Christian or non-Christian, well-versed in the Bible or unfamiliar with it, fans of the Harry Potter series will find this an illuminating and captivating read.
You can buy the book from just about any online book distributor, or from the publisher here.
