2021.09.19 00:52 sorcerykid Combating sexism requires actively deconstructing hegemonic masculinity
Ever since I first came out of the closet as genderqueer 20 years ago, it's always intrigued me why social conventions have changed and evolved in completely disparate ways for women compared to that of men. In particular, I've been fascinated how masculinity has become more rigid and restrictive the past three decades. In stark contrast, femininity is continuously breaking down barriers and challenging the status quo.
This limited range of male gender presentation is inherently a byproduct of sexism and cissexism combined. Men are never supposed to appear like women, because women are assumed to be an inferior class to men. By extension, for any man to dress, look, or act in the same way as a woman -- including allowing himself to be objectified or sexualized -- is to reduce all men to the same status as women, which is deemed objectionable.
I believe this is in great part because men's bodies are actually representative of a collective, and therefore must be negotiated according to a standard of modesty that meets the approval of all other men, mostly heterosexual men, in order to secure and maintain male social dominance. Manhood is essentially the supreme hivemind, in which uncritical gender conformity must be imposed upon the masses to maintain control. This probably explains the recent uptick of "bro culture", where so many men lately feel the need to affirm their bro status by interjecting colloquialisms like "bro", "dude", and "man". It's a self-reinforcing feedback loop.
Although men are afforded great power and privilege in society, by consequence they sacrifice significant individual freedom and autonomy (a good analogy is all the controversy surrounding the improprieties of English nobility lately). This is why men feel compelled to repress thoughts, feelings, and actions of femininity, because they are being continuously judged by their peers and expected to maintain and uphold an unyielding archetype of manhood for the benefit and security of all other men. Hence any one man that is perceived to undermine this group dynamic (such as by being too gay or too girly) is regarded as a threat to the status of the universal "brotherhood" and must be punished to reassert what it means to be a "real man".
Women, being considered a lower status by comparison, however are able to assert themselves moreso as individuals, even though they too are judged as a collective by heterosexual men. But they can seek to define womanhood on their own terms, which of course includes asserting that women have ownership over their bodies and that how women dress is not an invitation to be sexualized and that women can do anything they want without needing the approval of men.
This is why I truly believe that one of the most effective ways that men can work to dismantle these oppressive binary gender norms, including heterosexism and cissexism and sexism, for the sake of both women and men alike is to showcase the fragility of conventional masculinity -- to confuse, to confound, and ultimately to question. Once people come to acknowledge that there isn't only one way to be a man and to still be respected, it will become abundantly clear that there isn't only one way to be a woman and to still be respected as well.

2021.09.19 00:52 RepresentativeRule99 where to go to a zoom therapy session??
i have a therapy session on Monday over zoom and have no idea where to do it. My room would be ideal but I think my roommates will be around and i don't want to bother them by asking them to leave. Is there any place I could go that's private and has good connection?
I was thinking of reserving a music practice room, but is it a problem that I'm not actually playing music there?

2021.09.19 00:52 eatmyass445 Opinions?
Went through formal rush at Texas Tech in the spring and suicided an org. Got cut last round and ended up dropping. Pikapp is colonizing on campus and ended up sending me an email, which gives me the opportunity to become a founding father. Should I rerush in the spring, or should I go try to pursue being a founding father?

2021.09.19 00:52 BunsMunchHay Ballsy candidate aspires to kick Owners out of their own company
I recently interviewed a candidate for a mid-level manager position. This would be a step down for the candidate, who is a VP elsewhere, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt as he may want less responsibility. When I asked why he was leaving his current job, he said he sees an opportunity at our company to blow past my and the other VP’s performance, take over our jobs, and ultimately overtake the CEO’s position. Apparently he can’t do this at his current company because it’s owner operated. I let him know we are also owner operated and the President, VPO and I have no plans to retire. Obviously we’re not going to hire him but you have to respect that confidence. He had zero industry experience.
